The Ordinary: A Review
Have you ever wanted to try high end skincare, but never could justify spending the $$$? Fortunately for us, there are so many new and innovative brands cropping up aiming to bring to market effective yet affordable products in the beauty/skincare industry. Ever since discovering Beauty Pie, I've been on a skincare kick - I've been on the hunt for smaller brands that are innovative, exciting, effective, and most importantly, accessible and affordable. There is something so exciting about discovering new brands, amazing dupes, and good deals - it's almost like the feeling of finding buried treasure, or when you put your hand in your pocket and find some money you put in there 2 weeks ago.
The Ordinary. What an interesting name for a brand. When I first heard about The Ordinary, I was so excited to try out all of their products. Their mission alone is enough to make you root for and support them. The whole idea behind this company is that they bring to market innovative skincare with many of the active ingredients and effective formulations that are found in high-end skincare, and they do so at crazy affordable prices. This is their motto found on their site:
"The Ordinary was created to celebrate integrity in its most humble and true form. In the category of functional beauty, integrity is rare. Commonplace technologies are referred to as groundbreaking and insensible pricing strategies confuse the audience, disguising commodity technologies as advanced. The Ordinary exists to communicate with integrity and bring to market effective, more familiar technologies at honourable prices."
Doesn't it make you want to buy all of their stuff?! I love companies like this - they're authentic, straight to the point, and honest. And most importantly, super affordable!! This is really how every company should be, but I digress. Let's get into the review of these products.
You'll first notice the packaging of these products are very minimal and in a way, quite clinical. What I love about this brand is that they really highlight the "active" ingredient in their products, and it's just so cool for skincare nerds like me to know what exactly is on my skin and how it could benefit me.
I broke these products up into skincare and then foundations. I'll start with the skincare:
The first product is what they call a "direct acid" moisturizer with azelaic acid suspension 10%. This product claims to "brighten the skin tone while visibly improving the evenness of skin texture and reducing the look of blemishes. It is a multi-functional support ingredient for all skin types and also acts as an effective antioxidant." I sometimes struggle with uneven skin texture, so I figured I would try it out. It comes out as a thicker looking moisturizer, but when blended in, it feels super lighweight on the skin and melts in easily.
Okay, for the pros: It's super effective - I can literally feel it working the morning after I put this on. I feel like this product would be amazing for people with acne prone skin that isn't too sensitive. Unfortunately for me and my extra-sensitive skin, this was a bit too strong. One of the cons is that it can make your skin much more sensitive to the sun, and to basically everything. I tried this stuff out for a couple of days, but I ultimately could not continue using it as my skin is just wayyy too sensitive for this stuff.
If you're not sensitive, and you struggle with acne, DEFINITELY try this out. It almost reminds me of a retinol, with the way it feels and how it reacts with the skin. It may temporarily make your skin peel a bit, but not too much. Do I like this? To be honest, I do. I just wish my skin wasn't so sensitive so that I could actually use this product. I rate this 5/10.
The next product is an under eye serum with 5% Caffeine & EGCG. On the site, it claims: "Independent studies have shown that topical use of each of caffeine and EGCG can help reduce looks of puffiness and of dark circles in the eye contour. "
Can I just say that I love this product?!?! It's such a great serum - it feels a bit slimy when you apply it on the skin but it absorbs quickly and you really only need to use the littlest bit. While I haven't seen my dark circles go away, it definitely helps aid in reducing puffiness - something I suffer with, especially in the mornings. Interestingly, I feel like using too much of this stuff makes my dark circles a bit worse. Not by a lot, but it's noticeable to me. I suggest using this serum very sparingly under your eyes. It'll last much longer too :)
Overall, a good product, but not holy grail worthy. I rate this 6/10.
This next product is a hyaluronic acid 2% with B5 serum. I want to first start off by saying that EVERYONE should be using hyaluronic acid!! It is one of the most incredible ingredients/technologies that has ever come to the beauty/skincare industry. I know the word "acid" is a bit scary sounding, but it's nothing like what you'd expect. Hyaluronic acid is naturally found in the body and skin, and because it is made up of hydrophilic molecules, it attracts water and moisture into the skin, leaving you looking super hydrated, plump, and firm.
This HA formulation by The Ordinary is definitely one of the best I've tried at such an incredible price point. It absorbs well into the skin and leaves your skin feeling super hydrated without the heaviness of a moisturizer. I really only use this mixed with my Beauty Pie Stem Cell serum as my moisturizer, both day and night, and I have never felt so hydrated during this brutal winter.
I rate this a 10/10! There is nothing I would change about this formulation. It's amazing!
Okay... so here's where it gets a bit hairy.
So I was super excited to see that The Ordinary does foundation too... one of my ultimate vices. I was so excited that I got 3 of them, thinking they were going to be something amazing. And for $6.70 each, I thought I couldn't go wrong. In theory, these should've been amazing given the skincare benefits it includes. It really hurts me to say... because I really love this brand and company... but y'all need to change your formulations man!!!
I got 2 Coverage Foundations (in different colors) and 1 Serum Foundation. While both formulations looked wonderful on the skin on first application, they lasted about 2 hours before they started separating and breaking down from the oils on my skin. By the end of the day, it seemed as though I never put any foundation on in the first place! What was weird, too, is that where I had applied my concealer under my eye area, it looked pretty decent. Everywhere else where I hadn't applied concealer over looked like a total mess. It is sooo unfortunate, because I really thought I would love these foundations.
While I know there is nothing on the site that claims longevity with these foundations, I still feel like they could do better than 2 hours of wear. I don't think any foundation should last such a short time. Give me a half a work day at least!
I mean, regardless, they look really great on the skin. They blended quite nicely and had a wonderful natural finish to them. I really wish these worked well on my skin. Maybe my skin is just too oily? Who knows. What I can say is that the packaging is on point. Sleek, simple, and easy to travel with - all check marks in my book!
I unfortunately rate this a 2/10 :(
Overall, I'd say The Ordinary is an amazing company with amazing products. While some products didn't work out well for me, it doesn't necessarily mean they're bad products! All products work differently for each individual and if you're interested in a product I mentioned, I say go for it and test it out for yourselves. The price point can't be beat, and I'm sure you'll all find products you absolutely adore from them. And as I said, The Ordinary's brand mission is just so admirable. Support companies you believe in :)
I'll see you guys next week for another blog post <3
